Finally made it on the water......and my gosh was there water! Grand looked totally different since October. Made it to the ramp about 1 pm and had to wade water just to get on the ramp. Took about 45 min to catch enough big shad in the back of a cove for the day. Figured we'd use FCS for bait as we're out of Tiny's Dough Bait!
All was going well until we hit the channel and then it was a game of dodge ball with all the debris......unfortunately the new prop suffered some damage but nothing unfixable. About half way up-river the leads on the bait tank managed to contact one another.....yep that's a direct short.....looked like you lit a cannon fuse wherever the wires ran......re-rigged the connection and the aerator started working again......back in business but we lost about half the shad. Okay, we ain't wet a line at this point and I'm already in the hole! Little One says, "We're gonna have a bad day!"...to which I replied, "Maybe so, but we're gonna have fun anyway!".
We ran until I found what would be suitable wind/water for a drift.......after a short drift it was apparrent that tactic wasn't gonna work as we had opposing wind and water current plus leaves kept tanglin up in the lines, hooks, and sinkers....a drifters true nightmare! It's about 3 pm now and no fish and the Little One is gettin a bit testy.
I tell her that if we're gonna catch any fish today we gotta find Cousin Eddy......"Who's cousin Eddy?", she asked........"He's that feller livin over behind that log jam who gathers up all the blue cat so's the river don't wash em away", I replied. At this point, I truly believe she thought her old man was FOS......sometimes maybe but not this time!
Plan was tie up an fish the slack/eddy water below the jams. Before all the rods were out two started poppin and the Little Blonde resumed her role as Queen of the Blue Cat......yep, that first one came on the rig I got her for xmas.....so it made for a kodac moment. We picked up another fish and here comes grandpa/grandkid and anchor about 75 yds down-stream.......he tries some small talk but at this point I'm not in the mood as the killed our bite.....after about 15 min, to our relief they moved on. Let things quiet down a bit and we eased down to the next jam.....fresh dose of FCS and the bite was back on.....then it slowed....we rebaited...and it was on again with her taking a 5 lber.
The first sunburn of the year was gettin to us plus we were outta FCS and I'd promised her a trip to look for fossils. We ended the fishin with 13 blues and a nasty ol channel. We eased into a cove and cleaned 9 blues....enough for a mess for Mother's Day plus one to freeze. Found a few neat fossils and called it a day!
We're back in the saddle again!
